George Orwell, a British writer of the twentieth century, is world-famous for his politicalsatiric novels. Nineteen Eighty-Four is his masterpiece, which manifests a new form ofgovernment totalitarianism. Under the totalitarian regime, the politics, economy and even thespiritual life of its subjects of Oceania are in the grasp of the totalitarians, which makes thepopulace desperate. Orwell has great concerns for the working people so that he sendswarnings to the world in prevention of world disaster. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter1expounds on the characteristic traitsof the politics in the novel. Laying bare the motives behind the hierarchical structure in atotalitarian country, it reveals how the totalitarians sealed its world for the betterimplementation of total control and what novel forms of terror they took to defend theirachievement.Chapter2discusses the special economic mode under the totalitarian rule and itsoutcomes. The economy was highly centralized and production and assumption were based onstate planning, which resulted in the economic inequality and aggravated the class inequalityaccordingly. Meanwhile, it analyzes the defects of totalitarianism with the considerations ofhistory and reality.Chapter3reveals the spiritual dimension from two parts—emotions and thoughts. Therewere no emotions except those for the Party in Oceania where the relationships of parents andchildren, couples got abnormal. And nearly all ideas in one’s head were implanted by theParty and any unorthodox thought would put one in danger.Through the analysis of the harms of totalitarianism in Nineteen Eighty-Four, taken intoconsideration of history and reality, the thesis concludes that totalitarianism will lead thepeople to tread on a road of no return; mankind should rise to fight in face of disaster; and anew political system is urgently needed to make human live with dignity in a world wheredemocracy and constitutions are the safeguards.
