An Exposition Of Famous Person's Academic Lecture In 1920

After the May 4th Movement, all aspects of Hunan social were in reformation: the New Culture Movement had flourished,various new ideologies had introduced into Hunan; people's sounds for social information had never stopped; and growing needs for education reformation had gained momentum; Hunan Autonomous campaign had initiated. In this background, Hunan Provincial Education Association took re-election opportunity to hold Changsha Celebrity Academic Lecture Association, inviting Chinese and foreign celebrities Dewey, Russell, Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Dongsun, Zhang Puquan to Hunan to speech. The celebrities made more than forty speeches in the main hall (Zun Daohui) and branch hall (Hunan First Normal University), covering political, educational, cultural, social transformation, gender equality and so on. Hunan military and political circles, county representatives, students,…, nearly everyone in the Changsha city turned out to listen the academic lectures. Celebrities gathering in Changsha, was the pageant for Hunan. Besides, celebrities were also invited to attend forums, banquets to discuss issues about Hunan education, Hunan autonomy, and so on. Changsha schools took the opportunity to invite celebrities to make speeches in their schools, offering advice and suggestions on the Hunan education. Both for the Hunan educational theory and Hunan politics, the Association have a major impact. Among the academic lectures, Russell's lecture "Bolsheviks and World Politics" was the most popular one, having the most far-reaching influences. This speech caused Hunan progressive youth to debate on the social reform issues. After making the Changsha speech, Zhang Dongsun lifted the curtain on the discussion of socialism in the name of"another lesson got in the tour". Meanwhile, Changsha Celebrity Academic Lecture Association encouraged people for reflection on the education situation in Hunan, promoted the development of education and culture in Hunan, and also played a direct role in the birth of Hunan Autonomous Provincial Constitution.
