Under the guidance of the cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan, the thesis is in an attempt to make a contrastive analysis of the cohesive devices in both English and Chinese scientific and technical text. And from the perspective of textual translation, the statements are made to describe how to improve the quality of the E-C translation of scientific and technical text. It is admitted that cohesion is the ideal method to improve the quality of the E-C translation of scientific and technical text. Through the contrastive analysis of the cohesive devices in the E-C translation of the scientific and technical text, we aim at finding the similarities and dissimilarities of cohesive devices between the English and Chinese scientific and technical text. In particular, our attention is concentrated on describing and explaining the influences of the difference of cohesive devices on E-C translation of the scientific and technical text. The implications for the E-C translation of the scientific and technical text are clarified in detail in the study so as to enrich the translation studies and practices in terms of text linguistics, especially for the cohesion theory. According to the comparative study of the cohesive devices both in the source language text and target language text, it is clear that the cohesion plays an important role in understanding source language text (SLT) and reconstructing the target language text (TLT). In the process of translation, the awareness of cohesion helps to understand the original text and produce a coherent translated version. Therefore, during the process of E-C translation of the scientific and technical text, the analysis and understanding of the cohesion must be constructed under the source language text, namely, consideration of the source language text as a whole in the text-understanding communicative process, And In the text-reconstructing communicative process, due to cohesion as a visible network, the target language text should be considered as a whole. In other words, the translator should consider the meaning of target language text as a unified whole and do not put the focus of translation on the level of individual word and sentence. By this means, it can avoid the so-called'translationese'in the target language text and make the translated version conform to the norm of the target language text. Moreover, the target language text can achieve the textual cohesion.The present thesis is composed of five chapters. In the first chapter, the writer clarifies the research background, the objectives and the significance of the present study as well as the organization of the thesis. In the second chapter, the writer makes a brief literature review of textual translation and cohesion theory; the thesis also illustrates several relevant concepts such as text, texture and cohesive tie. The third chapter makes a comparative study of cohesive devices in both English and Chinese scientific and technical text. And the influence of the differences of cohesive devices on the E-C translation of the scientific and technical text is described in detail. In the fourth part, the implications for the E-C translation of the scientific and technical text will be summarized through the application of the cohesion theory in the present study. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the major findings of this study and states its limitations and some suggestions for further study.
