It is via context that people can understand others. Chinese is an implicit language. Though it is loose in sentences structure, it still can be understood through context. However, English is an explicit language and it embodies logical relationship by using some cohesive devices, we can find that the subject is always highlighted in English, that is why people say Chinese is parataxis-prominent, while English hypotaxis-prominent. Cohesion and coherence play an important role in English because they are all displayed in sentences linking and contribute to understanding of English. Then what kind of cohesive devices can be used in C-E consecutive interpreting? There are so many approaches to interpreting English in consecutive interpreting, but due to very limited time, interpreters do not notice cohesion and coherence when interpreting from Chinese to English, and as a result, neither coherence nor logical relationship of English are well handled by interpreters and embodied in interpreting, and then the listening comprehension will be influenced more or less.Through contrastive analysis, a conclusion can be drawn: interpreting contestants do not use proper grammatical devices to transform implicit logical relationship of Chinese to explicit one in English, the incorrect use of grammatical devices also influence cohesion and coherence in textual interpreting. In addition, since some information may be lost in contestants’ interpreting, cohesion and coherence also be affected in terms of the use of lexical devices, repetition of certain English words does not conform to English native speaker’s habits. What’s more, semantic connection occurs when interpreting word to word, interpreters should take expressions into consideration in the light of semantic devices, which will make English expression much more authentic. The study will be of significance in interpreting teaching, learning and in its development.
