The Research On Narrative Function Of Space In Novels

The novel is the art about time as well as the art about space. Many treatises studying the fiction narrative function from the time dimension are available, but essays studying that from the spatial dimension are still less than normal. However, fiction narrative function of space shouldn't be overlooked both in the novel theory and the practice of writing fiction.This thesis mainly concerns about the physical space . Apart from the static space, such as cities and villages, landscape architecture, natural scenery, activities, scenes, and etc; it also consists of the dynamic space conversion, such as the mobile of geographic location, landscape architecture transformation, and scene switching.This paper mainly discusses the narrative function of the physical space in the novel from three aspects: arranging the narrative structure, controlling the narrative rhythm and performing figures'identity and personality. Novelists make good use of the fiction narrative function of space. It fully reflects that they have deeply grasped the narrative art of a fiction.
