Known as the "novel of the century","Freedom" is the most successful representative work of Jonathan Franzen,a contemporary American realist writer. With this novel, the author has appeared on the cover of Time magazine and is called a great American novelist"."Freedom" clearly and comprehensively depicts the United States in the early 21st century, highly praised by readers and critic field after its publication, having extraordinary significance in the history of American literature Continuing the author's panoramic depiction of contemporary American middle-class families, this novel tells the story of the Berglund family's vision of "freedom" but its gradual disillusionment, which truly presents the living conditions of contemporary middle-class families in the United States, and the author reveals the blind admiration of Americans for the false proposition of freedom for a long time, thus advocating that true freedom is not self-indulgence but self-restraint."Freedom" is the fusion of realism and postmodernism, deeply excavating the essence of freedom, therefore, this paper analyzes the living space and mental state of the protagonist in the novel from three aspects of physical space, social space and psychological space, explains the intricate social relations and confusing inner world of the characters wandering in the suburbs, cities and nature, exploring the causes of different spatial characteristics. The protagonist in the novel blindly pursues complete and absolute freedom and yearns to break away from the shackles brought by others, which leads to his life to fall into misfortune. This novel is a wake-up call for people who have always advocated blind freedom.Only by establishing contact with society on the premise of abiding by the rules to the greatest extent can one give full play to one's talentsIn the upsurge of realism and ethics research on "Freedom",this paper chooses to use the space narrative theory to interpret this great literary work, focus on the narrative space of the text,so as to deeply discuss the inner theme and spiritual connotation of the novel through artistic forms.Providing a new direction for the study of "Freedom",it discusses Franzen's panoramic description of trivial life of family of origin,to explain Franzen's thinking on freedom.
