English reading is a kind of ability to obtain information. Students acquire extensive information by reading. According to the "English Curriculum Standard", students should be able to read the reading materials of various genre, including articles in the newspaper, magazine, websites and so on. Also, students should be capable of reading works of literary; the total volume of reading comes to 300, OOO.So, this is really a challenge to the reading teaching. Lots of English teachers have realized the importance of English reading and also have attached emphasis on it. However, many English teachers just always divide the complete discourse into language points. As a matter of fact, it is far more enough to explain language points, and it is necessary to teach students how to analyze discourse structures according to different genres and themes. Therefore, this thesis tries to explore the teaching approach based on genres.This thesis gets to know the teaching and learning situation of the reading class in high schools through questionnaire survey and expatiates the reading theory, genre theory and the constructive theory which are the strong supporting theories for this research. Then make an analysis of English textbook of Oxford English (Shanghai Edition), which are currently used by high school students and present the teaching approach based on the genre by providing cases.At the end of the thesis, the author provides several suggestions as follows. First, teachers should abandon the old methods of English reading teaching. They need to focus on the whole passages instead of language points of the reading materials. Also they should be aware that they the guiders not the translators of reading amterials.Then for students, they are supposed to get rid of the bad habits of reading and learn to use the reading strategies.
