The Chinese art education has made great progress rapidly in recent years. With the reformation of enrolment system, most colleges or universities set up the fine arts academy or the fine arts department, and most fine arts departments offer their oil painting specialities. The oil painting teaching has come to an unprecedented scale, but during the oil painting teaching, sketching is almost the only way to carry out. The copying of the oil painting has been involved in the newly set up materials and techniques class, but not raised to the level of theory to understand, and has not reached the level of active use. This article traced the source of the copying teaching, studied the meaning, classification and its basic characteristics and especially focused on the different applications of copying teaching used in Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting art education and oil painting teaching. At the same time, this article dug the history of copying teaching used in the Western painting tradition. This article theoretically discussed the importance and necessity of copying class, and also proposed that copying is an important way to explore oil painting, demonstrated the importance of copying class in the process of oil painting teaching.Based on the summary of the copying teaching in the art history and theoretical discussion, combined with my own practice, I put forward the design principles of copying teaching. Then according to the principles, I designed teaching plans of three stages, which has been fully implemented. The teaching effect is very remarkable. After finishing the stage teaching, I made a stage questionnaire. The result of the survey shows the importance of copying class in the process of oil painting teaching. The combination of lectures, copying, sketching has been generally recognized.
