This paper studies the teaching research of verb–copying sentences in modernChinese from the perspective of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The authorcollects the corpus of verb-copying to analyze two important semantic relationshipswith investigation and deductive methods. Focusing on the semantic relationshipteaching, this paper designs the teaching contents and objectives in stages with thecombination of the features of verb-copying sentences and pragmatic functionalteaching methods.As one of the most frequently used syntactic structures in modern spokenChinese, the verb-copying sentence attracts more attention. Many scholars havestudied the syntactic structures、semantic features、pragmatic function, etc. Others alsoprovide the advices on the Chinese teaching, but there still is a debate. Based on therecent research, this paper explores the teaching strategies of the verb-copyingsentences with the analysis of corpus. The main procedures are the followings:1. Make a literature review of the verb-copying sentence, give an evaluation ofthe existing research and define the academic starting points of the research.This paper makes a review of the verb-copying sentences from the structurefeatures、internal classification、functional study, and then spreads out achievementsof verb-copying sentences teaching strategies. In the end, the paper concludes theproblems reflected in teaching process and puts forward the further study based on therecent research.2. Collect the materials in terms of the questionnaire to find out the foreigners’cognitive ability of verb-copying sentences. The contents of the questionnaire includedaily topics with short sentences. The respondents, most from Asia, are manly foreignstudents with middle and advanced levels in Chinese. With the analysis, the author classifies the errors in different levels and tries to find the reasons lead to the errors.3. Adopt the deductive method to analyze the internal semantic relationship ofthe verb-copying sentence, including causal relationship and appraisal relationship.Investigate the proportion of the two semantic relationships in frequently usedverb-copying sentences by the Corpus Retrieval System of Perking University.4. Analyze the teaching methods of causal and appraisal relationship from thesemantic perspective. Divide the verb-copying sentences into six frequent usedstructures, and then give lessons according to different levels、different stages.Besides, teachers can design topic contexts to help students to build their plentyexpressive ways. Finally, the paper analyzes the typical sentences of the verb-copyingsentences and establishes its cognitive bases.5. Analyze the specific problems met in verb-copying sentence teaching in termsof examples. These problems include the textbook design of verb-copying sentence,the definition of the compulsive and alternative verb-copying sentences, separablewords acted as verb-objective structure and the adverbial places, etc. Finally, thispaper gives a detail discussion about the problems above in order to providereferences for practical teaching.
