On The Character Modelling And Its Aesthetic Features Of Shen Huang's Paintings

In the field of traditional chinese painting,figure painting is the earliest form to get matured.Although the modelling features of paintings were different according to the changes of aesthetic fashion,the main feature of traditional chinese painting which was modelling through bold lines hadn't been changed.Shen Huang, who is one of the Eight Eccentrics of YangZhou,not only inheritted the technique expression of traditional figure painting,but also started to make use of cursive script line in copying of figure painting creatively.And based on the theory and painting practices of masters of previous generation,he got the theoretical perspective of painting spirit but not appearance,meaning but not shape .Shen Huang not only bravely broke traditional idea in art technic,but also broadened the subject material range of figure painting,and brought figures of laborious masses into the palace of painting art.These innovations of Shen Huang were due to his individual effort and most importantly,the era background when he lived.At that time,the economy of YangZhou was developped and the cultural atmosphere was unprecedently thick,which made lots of professional painter scramble for coming to YangZhou. Painters had to take the aesthetic demand of sponsors and consumers into consideration in order to make artistic quality get more and more closer to social reality.Taking the final feudal dynasty Qing as era backgroud , the characteristic of advocating personality of the Eight Eccentrics of YangZhou as main clew,the figure painting of ShenHuang as theme,and the innovations of his personal painting as cut-in point, this dissertation explored the modelling and aesthetic features of chinese figure paintings.
