Since China and Vietnam are neighbour countries, they are deeply related to each other in terms of politics, economy, and culture. In all ages, Chinese culture has great effect on Vietnamese culture, especially on the aspect of spiritual belief. The development of Vietnamese spiritual belief can be divided into four periods: Primitive Times, County Times, Vassal Times and Independent Times. There are a lot of different regional ghosts, gods, sages in folk beliefs of Vietnam. The development of different regional folk beliefs of Vietnam has its own unique feature, such as the manito in Primitive Times, localized manito in County Times, and various man-gods and Gods of Fortune in Vassal Times. In the process of development, the appearance of gods and apotheosized men-gods reflects the development of Vietnamese national consciousness. The belief of plant-gods and the animal-gods reflects the agricultural culture of Vietnam, and the exemplary role of Gages has its own social effects. This paper has made a relatively comprehensive research on folk beliefs of different region concerning ghosts, gods, sages between China and Vietnam, based on theories of religion, folk beliefs, anthropology and linguistics. Via the research of this topic, the process of Vietnamese spiritual culture development will be better understood. Furthermore, it will be a great contribution to the tie of China and Vietnam.
