A Commentary On Song Of Everlasting Regret Translated By Xu Yuanchong

Song of Everlasting Regret is a masterpiece by Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty. Backing on the history of Anshi Turmoil and taking Han Yue fu as genre, the long narrative poem tells a beautiful but tragic love story between the Tang Emperor Li Longji and his first lady Yang Yuhuan.it has been among the greatest Chinese classic poetry.From the perspective of theories of "beauty in three aspects" and "three methods in translation" by Professor Xu Yuanchong, this paper is set to analyze the English version of Song of Everlasting Regret by Professor Xu. The comment will roll down by analyzing both the original poem and the translated one by Xu and comparing different English versions of the poem. Six chapters will be included as follows:Chapter 1, Preface, including background, purpose, methods, and new ideas of doing the study. Chapter2, Literature Review, looking into the study accomplishments and insufficiency on relevant themes. Chapter3, Supporting Theories, introducing Xu's theories in literature translation closely related to the paper. Chapter4, Introduction to the Original Poem. Chapter5, Commentary on Xu's Translated Version. Chapter6, Conclusion.Theories stem from practice, and instruct practice in turn. Literature translation theories are no exception. Through analysis of Xu's English version of the poem in aspects of words, sentences, rhetoric, rhymes, and form of the poem, the paper highlights the instructive function of "beauty in three aspects" and "three methods in translation" in translations of Chinese poetry into English.
