After the outbreak of the Opium War, under the historical mission, the poetry in the late Qing Dynasty, played an important role to awaking the public in improving society. The discussions and descriptions in the poetry, constituted a complex British image. This thesis begins from the evil and the ideal image, uses the comparative lite-rature and cross-cultural theory and methodology, details the origin, characteristics and influences of the British image in the Late Qing poetry.In the invasion of the Foreign national, Late Qing Dynasty poets as self-concept in the ideological aspects, such as major changes occur, they begin turning to the world from the center stick China. At the time of trying to build the new system, advanced intellectuals also portrays an exotic image. In the background of the Opium War, analysis of the evil image, starts from the original "barbarians" to "devils", and finally to the "foreign devils" stereotyped image of a single, revealing the beginning, the feature and the impact of the formation of this image. In the ideal image of British, through the descriptions of the British poetry economic civilization and the political system in the poetry, the UK's advanced culture and civilization is analyzed to showing the influence of strong Foreign National to vulnerable self, and analysis the contradictions of mind on the strong powers of the Liberal intellectuals at that time.British image in the Late Qing poetry, not only reflects the people's hates and despise on the Foreign National, but also full of people with advanced construction of the expectations of the ideal of national order. Depicts of the British image, is a reflection of the trend of Chinese Modernity.
