Analysis Of Target Culture Teaching In Foreign Language Teaching

Both human being and animal have communication system. The communication system of man—language, is much more precise and complicated than that of other animals. It conveys messages which the animals' system can not transfer—human cultures. Culture and language are two components of a whole, one is content and the other is carrier.With the increasing economic, technological and cultural development and exchange world wide, people began to sense that successful foreign language communication not only depends on sound linguistic knowledge and ability, but also largely dependent on the relative culture knowledge, culture awareness and intercultural communication competence.Culture and language are interrelated and interactive. The profound significance of culture teaching in language teaching has been studied and testified through theoretical study and teaching practices by numerous linguistics and educators. In order to improve the teaching proficiency and quality of foreign language teaching, to enrich the learners' culture knowledge, to cultivate their culture awareness and enhance their intercultural communication ability, it is essential to integrate the target culture teaching into the foreign language teaching.Aimed at promoting the target culture teaching in foreign language teaching, enhancing students' intercultural communication competence, by analyzing the main problems of culture teaching in foreign language teaching (especially English teaching at universities and colleges in China), this thesis makes an attempt to provide some basic ideas for target culture teaching in foreign language teaching, including the teaching aims and contents, principles that we should observe, and some practical and effective teaching techniques. Particularly, it presents and elaborates some specific proposals on ameliorating current status of culture teaching in foreign language teaching, concerning revision of teaching syllabus, compilation of culture teaching materials, evaluation of cultural teaching effect, teacher training and renewal of teaching facilities.
