Most researches on Hegel's theory of civil society are based on Elements of the Philosophy of Right, but how does he exactly interpret the civil society in his book? This paper will try to figure this out by analysis of the section of civil society ofHegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right. The main points of the paper can be summed up as follows: How do these moments relate to each other as a concept of civil society in Hegel's Elements of the Philosophy of Right? How does civil society exist as a medium between the family and the state? And how does the civil city ascribe to the moment of ethical life? The answer to each question composes the each chapter of my thesis. The first chapter of my thesis is all about three moments of civil society which are the system of needs, the system of justice, the police and the corporation. On Hegel's view of civil society, the process of these moments is the process of the civil society. The second chapter of my thesis further studied the relation between the family and the civil society, as well as the relation between the civil society and the state. From the family to the civil society, education plays an important role. And the corporation makes its possible to transit of the civil society to the state. On the ground of the principle of recognition, the principle of universality and particularity, the third chapter of my thesis further studied the relation between the civil society and ethical life. On the view of recognition, people in civil society would rather recognition each other than in the contract. Although the recognition among them is of formalism, but in corporation it reflects that the individuals are subordinated to overall interest. And that is what Hegel's ethics mean. On the view of universality and particularity, corporation integrates right with obligation. According to Hegel, he believed that the integration of rights and duties would display the field of ethics. In this sense, civil society is a moment of the ethical life.
