Yu Jingjun, a composer living in Australia, is one of the few Chinese musicians who have been included in The Oxford Dictionary of Music. He bestows his musical works excellent melody sense and is good at using modern composing methods to write music of Chinese style with full harmony and ordered musical texture. His musical works display sheer professionalism and high artistic value, especially in this vocal suit which is full of Chinese artistic features like unifying musical idea, coherence, integrated structure with the end echoing the beginning.This thesis adopts Three Ballads of Li Yu, a vocal suit created by the composer Yu Jingjun, as the research object. After briefly introducing Li Yu's life and the general situation of artistic songs, this paper studies this work from aspects like word choice, artistic features and singing requirements.This article touches on the characteristics of the theme and the techniques of Li Yu's Artistic Songs. It mainly talks about three aspects, i.e. the method of developing melody, types and features of tonality arrangement and musical forms and the technical features of accompaniment.This thesis emphasizes the practical application of Li Yu's artistic songs. First, it points out the significance of singing classical poetic songs. Then from the respects of singing and teaching it discusses how to master the traits of this vocal suit itself, several points of singing methods and how to deal with vocal techniques to the point.This paper mainly adopts practice method and literature study. By visiting the composer himself, it begins its multi-angle and multi-level research, aiming at explaining and singing this work objectively and correctly.Chinese classical poetic songs, which were born from the blending of Chinese and western musical cultures, possess irreplaceable theoretic and practical significance in today's teaching and singing. Unlike other single artistic songs, Yu Jingjun's vocal suit Three Ballads of Li Yu is of Chinese style, which employs the famous poet in Tang Dynasty Li Yu's representative ballads in his different life stages as lyrics and integrates the traditional Chinese musical techniques and the modern musical expressive methods. The composer unites refined ballads and accomplished artistic techniques, mingling the melody, lyrics and piano accompaniment into a perfect unity. Furthermore, the lyrics are made of both Chinese and English. This kind of phenomenon is rarely seen in classical poetic songs. Researches on this vocal musical work is even less.This study is based on the author's singing practice and appreciation. It deeply explores the singing expression of vocal suits and the value of this expression in vocal music practice, initially forming the understanding of the author herself.The conclusion part summarizes the artistic characteristics and researching significance of the composition of the vocal suit Three Ballads of Li Yu.It is the first time in China to analyze and sing this vocal suit. So it should be a worthwhile vocal music teaching material. It is also rarely seen to match the lyrics of Chinese classical poetry with that of English, let alone analyzing the compatibility between the two lyrics from the aspect of phonetics. In this way, this article can help singers to grasp the stylistic features of this vocal suit on the whole and provides some referential ideas and experience for the following researches. It is of realistic and theoretic significance regarding the study and mastering of the styles of Chinese classical poetic songs and further improving singing capacity.
