In the history of contemporary new poetry in China, western poetry weighs heavily. The western-style creation of western poets makes the territory of Chinese poetry integral and copious. Chang Yao is one of the most outstanding western poets in 20th century Chinese poetry. Different from other western poets, Chang Yao, when 14 years old, left Hunan Province, and reached Qinghai Province at the age of 19. The poet, experiencing more than 22-year life of convict, piled up a western plateau by his spiritual and history-like western poetry after he returned to his hometown. Chang Yao's special cultural identity and his life experiences make his poetry have distinct features and form a unique western style.This thesis tries to discuss Chang Yao's poetry by reading Chang Yao's poetry and essays, and associating with his experiences, as well as the angle of the evolution of his cultural identity during his long-term creation. Chapter one mainly introduces the development of Chang Yao's poetic creation and the evolution of cultural identity. In the four different literary phases, Chang Yao's cultural identity has been changed because of the four phases: outsider, integrator, Tubote and man of virtue. Chapter two discusses the evolution of Chang Yao's cultural identity and the causes of forming the features of western poetry. The exploration is extended by the necessity and chance of choosing western style, the change of poetic style when heading towards the western region in difficulty and his aesthetic pursuit, and meanwhile, the writer also analyzes the mutual impact between cultural identity and poetic creation. Chapter three analyzes the particularity of Chang Yao's poetic creation and its significance. The poet chooses the west as his spiritual conversion. But after experiencing the 1990s'social vicissitudes and"meaning blankness", he freed himself from western view,"entered"and"got out of"the transmission of two mental states, showing the dynamic western region and the changes of western styles in different phases in poet'eyes. This thesis, compares and analyzes poet's western creation with different cultural identities, mirrors the poet's western style by means of the overall characteristics, to explore the particularity of Chang Yao's western poetry and the literary significance.
