Liu Chang Poetry Study

With the assumed name Gong Shi, Liu Chang is also called Liu Yuan Fu. He was born in Xinyu, Linjiang, where is Xinyu, Jiangxi today. He was a famous scholar in Song Dynasty. Together with his brother Liu Ban, and his son Liu Fengshi, he carried forward the Liushi in Mozhuang which was made to be Imperial Treasures with Sanhong in Poyang, Eryan Yiwang in Linchuan, Sanzeng in Nanfeng, Sankong in Qingjiang, Ouyang Xiu, Yang Wanli, and Liu Chenweng in Jiangxi in Song DynastyAt the sixth year of Qingli, Liu Chang and Liu Ban became the successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations. From them on, his complex but somewhat lucky career had started. Loyalty to the emperor and loving to the people was always treated by Liu Chang as his standard. He constantly improved himself, and hoping to quit his mission successfully. Liu Chang was a famous scientists, historians, and epigraphy pioneer in Song Dynasty. He was knowledgeable, and intensive, especially good at the study of Spring and Autumn Annals. Moreover, he published extensively. In addition, his major contribution in history was that he and his brother Liu Bin took part in compiling the Tzu Chih T'ung Chien, a great history book presided over by Sima Guang.As one of the active poets in the region of Renzong Emperor, Liu Chang was learned, and good at writing. He also had good performance in poetry, in which he wrote about the farewell with friends, colleagues with profound friendship, expressing personal pursuits of leisure, depicting the beautiful natural scenery and objects. He also writes poetry for paintings, and other creative elegy.The forms of Liu Chang's poetry are various. He was especially good at five-character-ancient-verse. The characteristics of Liu Chang's poems were showed in the following. In Chapter Three, the characteristics of Liu Chang's poetry were analyzed from the aspects of discussion, learning, and living. In Chapter Four, the status and impact of Liu Chang's poetry were described. In Conclusion, a comprehensive overview of the main problem, the learned poetry as a whole shows, and the old fashioned style in Liu Chang's poetry were mainly outlined.
