Ding Zan is a famous psychologist in china; his academic practice implied a large number of thoughtful ideological content of psychology. The literature review by taking, inductive analysis and other methods, in combination with the history of modern psychology of china on the basis of the relevant materials, systematically and comprehensively researched and studied the psychological thinking of Ding Zan.By systematically studying and researching the Western Psychological Theories, and on the basics of his own experience of Clinical Mental Health Practice, Ding Zan gradually developed his psychological thoughts under the background of the initial development of the Chinese Psychology in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Begins with Ding Zan's life, this article analyzes the origin of Ding Zan's Psychological Thoughts. From the early school experience of a student in the Central University and Peking Union Medical College, this article summed up the academic backgrounds of Ding Zan's Psychological Thoughts. Then begin with the background of the social environments and in combination with his childhood living conditions, this article discusses Ding Zan's psychological motivation in psychological research and the later development in his psychological career. The summery of Ding Zan's psychological thoughts includes two parts:theoretical and practical. Theoretical part discusses his contribution to the basic theories of psychology and the construct of Discipline of Psychology. In the aspect of theoretical psychology, this article summarized Mr Ding Zan's opinion about some basic problems in psychology, including the definition, nature, object of study, and research method of psychology and so on. His reflection and criticize about psychoanalysis indicated that Ding Zan had gradually digressed from the influence of Western Psychology and began to independently think about the fundamental principles of psychology; hence he gradually developed his own psychology thoughts guided by materialism. In practice, this article mainly discoursed on the theories of mental health and medical psychology, which were gradually established on the basis of Ding Zan's work of mental health practice. He had made almost accurate conclusions about the object of mental health, research methods, research contents, the relations between mental health and other disciplines. He was very concerned about the psychological problems of adolescence. He conducted researches on the intimacy relationship between youth, aadolescence neurasthenia, the adaptation in later adolescence and early adult, and gradually formed a trinity model of bio-social and cultural-individual in mental health and medical psychology, which was a major innovation in psychological therapy model. About the fundamental theory problems in medical psychology, Ding Zan proposed proper estimates in conjunction with the generally review of the big discussion about the Ideology of psychology of China which was happened soon after the founding of the country. He affirmatively confirmed the necessity and validity of medical psychology research, and established materialism as the guiding ideology of medical psychology research. From the perspective of historical materialism, the author described the dynamic development of Ding Zan's psychological thoughts respectively from personal experience, social environment, and the contents of literature reflect. The author proposed four stages:embryonic stage, exploration stage, the transition stage, mature stage. Each stage reflects the characteristics of a certain age and a certain content topic. Embryonic stage is mainly about the learning and mastering of basic theory of psychology; Exploration stage is a stage that Ding Zan begin to independently carry out mental health practice and rethink the Western Psychology theories, and gradually form a theoretical summary of mental health work; Transitional stage is a special time.In this period, Ding Zan wasn't engaged in psychology research and theoretical achievements very much, but he made a lot of important contributions to the development of science in new China, and is therefore closely connected to the later stage. This stage can be seen as laying the groundwork for the next stage. Mature stage is an important period. In this stage, Ding Zan's contribution is in the following aspects: The establishment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Psychology, the proposition of guiding ideology of Psychology, the subject institution, and a series guiding ideology of medical psychology. These contributions were of great importance, and it indicated the mature of his psychological thoughts. This paper also proposed a more detailed discussion about the positioning of the academic status of Ding Zan. Under the background of the development of history of modern psychology and medical psychology in china and in comparison with the other important psychologists in the same age, the author proposed two basic position through a perspective of historical materialism:1) one of the founders of modern psychology,2) the pioneer and disseminator of mental health, the pioneer and founder of medical psychology. In psychology theory and practice, Ding Zan persisted in the principle of learning by doing and correlating the theory with practice, which made his literature always reflect some characteristic of his age. His academic contribution to the Chinese Modem psychology can be summarized in terms of both theory and practice. In Theory:1)he played a certain role in the Enlightenment of Introduction and spreading of Psychological Thought; 2) he initiated the three factor model of the development of mental health in China, is the pioneer of the changing in medical model of psychotherapy 3) his Medical Psychology Thinking laid the early theoretical foundation for the development of the discipline of medical psychology 4) his theoretical contribution to the basic issues in psychology clarified the direction of the early development of Psychology in China. In practice, he didn't only research and treat a large number of cases of mental illness, but also promote and educate the masses. These works had greatly promoted the popularization of knowledge of mental health. His many theoretical discussions and summaries of the mental health still remain with guidance and practical significance todayFor some historical and other objective background reasons, there are some historical limitations and flaws in Ding Zan's Psychological Thought. This was reflected in the construction of his theory. Lack of systemically construction of theory was the main problem. Another problem is that, although the Ding Zan's psychological thinking was basically derived from practice, but there was no strong empirical research to confirm this. All these features were related to the style of his language and the nature of the work he conducted, and in some way objectively reflected the psychology at that time was still in develop. It is understandable that some theoretical point of view constructed by Ding Zan was not accurate enough to some extent under such a limited foundation of the subject.
