The Kangaroo is the novel of Lawrence during his mid-later period creative career. He is extremely disappointed with Europe in this period. In such mental condition, Lawrence hoped to create the ideal place "Rananim" so as to save the European society. "Rananim" ideal is the social ideal which produces after Lawrence had faced the breaking out of the First World War, and this is a Utopian Ideal. The Kangaroo is a work created with this ideal when Lawrence travelled to Australia. In this work, Lawrence showed his "Rananim" ideal through the experience of the main character Somers. The political and marital concept of view in the work is just the fundamental approach to realize his ideal of "Rananim".This paper, taking the text of The Kangaroo as the main body of the research, analyses Lawrence's thoughts about the political and marital problem revealed in The Kangaroo so as to disclose the characteristics of "Rananim" ideal. In essence, all the experiences in Australia of the main character Somers are a spiritual journey which is the exploration of "Rananim" ideal. It is the Utopian Ideal with strong subjectivity which is created in the writer's mind meets with the reality collision of the real world. At last, this ideal is stuck in the mire and become the visual record. The battles and struggles in politics and marriage of the key figure in fiction reflects that Lawrence tires to establish his own ideal and also shows the throes of despair and profound dialectical between self doubt and self-denial.This paper has been divided into three parts. The first part mainly starts from how Lawrence's "Rananim" ideal formed and his desire to realize the ideal, analyzing specifically the feeling of the incarnation of Lawrence, Somers when he first arrived in Australia. The feeling embodies both his hopes and dissatisfaction of the new continent. Therefore, Somers believed it's necessary to seek a powerful leader in Australia only under whose leadership can the ideal be achieved. Somers once held that the leader was the kangaroo. The second part of this paper carries out with a series of political activities taken by Somers to achieve his ideal as the main part. This part respectively analyzed Somers's feelings in detail:the absolute equality that bored him when he associates with Jack, the refusal of that Christ's love of Kangaroo, the resentment of the violence of war. It is for the aversion of these feelings that Somers refused them respectively. In his deep heart Somers believed that he was the strong man that might become the leader. In the respect of marriage, the psychological source and the result of Somers's struggle with his wife Harriett is carefully analyzed. Somers hoped to take the initiative in marriage and to make his wife completely under his control. Such consciousness is the reflection of the thought of strong political "power" of him. However, Somers was unable to get ultimate spiritual independence from his wife. Besides, he realized that he could never really become that leader. The frustration of these activities illustrates that Lawrence achieves "Rananim" ideal facing the difficulties of reality. The third part commences from the intrinsic reason of the failure of "Rananim" ideal and explains from the angle of Image of Comparative Literature Studies that Lawrence's hopes for Australia is but a spiritual Utopia journey which can never be practical. The fundamental reason of Lawrence's refusal of people like Kangaroo was his persistent pursuit of "Dark God". He believed that only by listening to the arrangement of the "Dark God" can man release his utmost energy in order to create the utmost value. This is Lawrence's real expectation for the figure of leadership. At the same time, the defeat of Rananim's dream in Australia urged Lawrence to change his salvation ideal to the path through the excavation primitive culture.
