Along with the enrollment expanding in recent years, the matriculate quality is becoming more and more complex with the matriculate number growing. In order to solve the problem, the hierarchical teaching has been put into practice especially for the basic courses such as the College English. This study is carried out based on the case of International Business School attached to Yunnan University of Finance and Economics which is known as a Chinese-foreign cooperative education program. The International business School has more than 3000 students who have great distinguishing learning competences. And in order to deal with the problem, the IBS carried out the hierarchical teaching for the basic courses. As we know, the overtly and covertly hierarchical teaching is the two patterns of the college English hierarchical teaching. The advantages of the hierarchical teaching have been confirmed in many researches, but at the same time, studies also show that there are also disadvantages existing in the overtly hierarchical teaching modes. As the result of that, the covertly hierarchical teaching mode is put forward by some researchers. This study is carried out in hoping to make an empirical description on the overtly hierarchical teaching and the covertly hierarchical teaching in college English class. And what's more, a comparison which is based on actual students'performance in the English test will be carried out to find out which mode of the college English hierarchical teaching is better, the overtly one or the covertly one.For an exact description and clear comparison, situations are put forward as hypothesis proposed and summarized in the first part of Chapter 3. And the following statistical analysis is corresponding with the hypothesis. As the result of the research, it is found that all the Hls are confirmed as true statements. And for the limitations, this study is a specific case-oriented study which means it cannot represent the overall phenomenon of English hierarchical teaching in different schools. And what's more, this study is carried out synchronically and the conclusions are unilateral and limited.
