Between The Old And New: Hohhot Urban Construction And Change In Modern Times (1840-1945)

Through describes the historical process of the formation of Hohhot and changes on the city administrative organization, public utilities, commerce, culture, education, lifestyle and other aspects of the this city in 1840-1945, this thesis intend to analyze the transition process of Hohhot from tradition to Modern.To be more specific, the main contents of this thesis are divided four parts:The author summarized the history evolution of Hohhot in first part. This section mainly focused on the constructing and merging process of Guihua and Suiyuan city, and the origin and evolution of the name of'Hohhot'. Secondly, the author analyzed the changes of urban public utilities. This section mainly focused on the establish process of the transport, healthcare, finance, communications and a series of public utility system and the role of these public utilities; moreover the author also describes transforming process of Hohhot City's commerce and modernization. The third part discusses the establish process of political institutions, the police and the judicial system and its functions, meanwhile discussed the changes of cultural education and life patterns, through analyzing the transformation of modern education, rising of the new lifestyle, etc. Part four describes the transformation stages and feature of modern Hohhot. Changes in Hohhot City from tradition to modern experienced the following stage:initial step, slow development, bogged down. This city is rising with commerce, and shared the tradition and new characteristics simultaneously. It gradually evolved from the single political city to a business-oriented multifunction one.
