| This paper based on the urbanization and the urban modernization provides a study on the urban history of Tangshan in modern times.Through an obsrevance with a lengthy period of time and a study with dividing period, it discloses the clue and the course and the distinguishing features and the essential reason about the urbanization and the urban modernization of Tangshan.In modern China, Tangshan is a medium-sized industry (mine) city whose more systematic study on the urban development still been a blank spot. Therefore, strengthening the study has its significance that the study not only fills in some supplements in the field of the urban history of Tangshan, but also is a foundational job in enhancing the study on inter-regional urban history and Beijing-Tianjin-Heibei cities and surrounding-Bohai cities. This paper based on the guidance of dialectical materialism and historical materialism and on the basic theories and methods of history science as well as of other branches of science, gives a more systematic study on the urban development history and illustrates that modern industry gives the significant influence on the urban development and emphasizes that the rising of city based on the development of mining industry is the distinguising feature in the urban development of Tangshan.The introduction part reviews the studies of the modern urban history of Chinese cities and Tangshan city and explains the research framework and the theoretical methodology and the basic trains of thought as well as the main reference materials. Also, it elaborates the related concepts.This paper consists of two segments. It attempts to provide an analysis of the modern urban history of Tangsan based on a lengthy period of time through combining the sectional recounts and the special subject of studies.The first segment breaks the modern urban history of Tangshan into three stages in a chronological order. It gives an account of the influence on the urban development of Tangshan based on modern industries in Tangshan, and shows the course of the urbanization and the urban modernization of Tangshan promoted by modem industries. The first segment includes the following chapters:Chapter One deals with the rising of Tangshan city in Late Qing Dynasty from 1878 to 1911. Its contents include the rising of Tangshan city promoted by modern industries. Chapter Two involves the development of Tangshan city in the Initial Period of the Republic of China from 1912 to 1936. Its contents contain the development of Tangshan with the deep development of modern industries. Chapter Three embodys the winding development and stagnation of Tangshan in the Late Period of the Republic of China from 1937 to 1948. Its contents contain the winding development under Japanese ruling and the stagnation under Kuomintang(KMT) governing in Tangshan.The second segment, a comprehensive featured study, providing a specific analysis with the urban modernization, discovering the strong influence on the urban development, consists of the following chapters:Chapter Four deals with the social consitution of Tangshan City. It discusses the basic facts on capitalists and their deputies and persons of signing contracts with enterprises as well as industrial workers in the industrial society. Chapter Five expounds the development of the cause in the urban culture and education and medical care and public health in the industrial society in modern times.The Concluding Part, as a summarization, points out the pattern and distinguishing features of the urban development of Tangshan in modern times.
