On the grasslands in northeast Asia many nations had lived a hunting and nomadic life since ancient times, and created unique grassland hunting and nomadic culture. The nations, such as Xiongnu, Xianbei, Qidan and Mongolia, played a significant role in the inheritage and development of the culture. The history of human and horses culture began with the domestication of Mongolian wild horses. As is shown in the petroglyphs, mural, sculptures and other artistic works preserved in the history, horses have been given rich cultural connotations and numerous symbolic significance, which are fully displayed in the design of human and horses. It is the crystallization of the nations' profound cultural traditions and distinct aesthetic appreciation. The design of human and horses displayed in the present grassland paintings and the works preserved in the history of grassland hunting and nomadic culture indicates it has become the carrier of spiritual outlook, social customs and aesthetic tendencies of times, exactly reflecting the life, customs, politics and military and other factors of specific periods. However, due to the lack of researches on the design, the superficial and incomplete knowledge of its connotations and aesthetic significance is always popular in the artistic circles. The previous researches failed to specifically analyze its development and completely and exactly master its characteristics. The thesis attempts to explore the design of human and horses in the grassland culture and its aesthetic development under the influence of spirit and customs in different periods and define the inspiration and influence of grassland hunting and nomadic culture on the present design connotation and aesthetics with the recognition and research of its culture remains. In the study the design of human and horses in the present paintings of grassland culture is traced back and some personal views about its theoretical enrichment and development are put forward.
