| As a mirror of real life, neologism is the reflection of the new thought, new things and new concept in language, of which we can find the development of language system via the analysis of semantic distribution, occurrence way, structural features, etc. and reflect the reality and requirements in social communication. The Modern Chinese Dictionary is thought to be the most authoritative Dictionary of Chinese because of its normative, theoretical, and epochal characters. According to comparing with the neologism in the appendix between the 2002 enlarged edition and the Fifth Edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary, we will discuss the dictionary's principles for recording neologism. The article can be divided into four chapters:The first chapter,"Introduction", declares the origin of selected topic as follows: one, on the basis of taking a comprehensive look over the neologism study in linguistic field, we choose the selected topic; two, stating this article's significance; three, stating the source of corpus. Secondly we summarize research status related to our study, including defining neologism, the source of neologism, lexicography, and standard dictionary record. At last we state the object, method, and operating steps in our study. In Chapter 2, we describe and analyze the neologism in the terms of semantic distribution, word creation, word formation and Markedness Theory, combine that with Cognitive Metaphor Mechanism, we discuss the causes and features of neologism. According to social field that the meanings of word belonging to, we divide the neologism in appendix of Modern Chinese Dictionary into ten natural semantics parts, that is: economy, scientific and technical information, description, recreation and sport with media, social life, policy and law, climatic environment, health care, transportation and education, the distribution of which is expatiated and analyzed statistically. With the analysis of word creation, we obtain that the neologism can be from new creative words, dialect, alien words and abbreviations, etc. With the analysis of word formation, we get the neologism's structure features, i.e. on phonetic form, two syllables form is the main trend; on morphemic combined form, compound words, especially the modifier-head construction of compound word is the main trend. Under Cognitive Linguistics guidance, we know the neologism created via metaphor is abstract and systematic. At last, with Markedness Theory, we analyze the phenomenon of lower division vocabulary in neologism, discuss the semantic development rules and demonstrate the two syllables trend of neologism.Chapter 3 has a comparison and classification analyses in detail for the neologism in appendix of Modern Chinese Dictionary (fifth edition).Three types are divided to analyze the neologism recorded in the appendix: the ones eliminated, modulated at entry and paraphrase, originally recorded in the Fifth Edition. The causes of the three types are also explained by recording words principles and neologism normative principles of Modern Chinese Dictionary. Finally, we should keep a positive and cautious attitude for recording neologism in normative dictionary. Firstly, follow the general principle: record the common words, i.e. general high words. Secondly, competitive principle, stable principle, systemic principle and practical principle should also be followed. In addition, complying with the following particular principles is still necessary: stable principle, general high principle and vital principle.Chapter 4 is conclusion, which summarizes all the content above. |
