Web-based courses emerge as the prevalence of Internet technology in the information age. It has been widely adopted by educators due to its apparent advantages, such as flexibility, convenience, efficiency and etc. The rapid development of the Web-based courses has gradually changed the way people getting education and the way to learn knowledge. Web-based courses facilitate the education by providing learners with access to the knowledge without any time and space constraints. It is also helpful to permit life-long learning for people due to the openness and interactivity offered by the Web-based courses platform. Comparing to traditional classroom education, Web-based courses have distinctly different core processes and specialty. It is vital to recognize such difference for the educators to design the Web-based courses successfully and to take advantage of the distance education platform. This rational recognition is achieved based on the practices, and it can also provide implications for the improvement of the practical work. Taking the Web-based course Economic Geography of China as an example, this paper attempts to discuss the essential elements of Web-based courses and the differences between distance education and traditional classroom education. Meanwhile, the present study also tries to investigate the procedures and methods for the design of Web-based courses. Based on these findings, the authors aim to provide guidance and practical implications for other educators to design the courses in an effective way. During the study of the Web-based course Economic Geography of China, the authors align the design method with the course content, in order to fulfill the requirements of the course and improve the quality and efficiency of distance education. Based on the close incorporation with practice work, this study enhances our understanding of the design of Web-based courses and contributes to the knowledge of Web-based courses development, which will provide implications for the practitioners and educators. The paper is organized into six sections. In the first section, the authors introduce the research background, research motivation, research methodology and the organization of the study. The design of the video system is discussed in the second section, including video file format transfer, video montage method, teaching video processing, and etc. This section analyzes the construction of the assistant teaching video and classifies the assistant teaching video, introduces the way of publishing the video on the Internet. This paper explores the design of lecture-slides system of Economic Geography of China and puts forward its criteria in the third section. In particular, using the City System as an example, the authors elaborate how to develop the lecture-slides systems and publish it on the Internet according to the design criteria. In the fourth section, the design of interaction system of the Web-based course Economic Geography of China is demonstrated, including the development of the interactive communication platform, the lecture blog, and the lecture email box. The characteristics of Web-based courses and its difference from traditional classroom education are analyzed in the fifth section, deepening understanding of Web-base courses. In the last section, the authors summarize the design method for the Web-based course Economic Geography of China and discuss the future research direction.
