In the historical process of the United States, both the Small Government pattern and Big Government pattern had once taken control and led the development of American economy, and occupied American political stage for a period of time. Today, the U.S. public put the"Big Government"into the teeth of the storm again. They think Obama's presidency and his political imply more power, more fund and more regulations of government, and will lead America enter a new era of"Big Government". Therefore, heated discussions on the government size and government role are aroused in the United States.This paper focuses on the United States in its first ten years of the 21st century, and the author intends to present and prove the resurgence trend of Big Government in the political area of United States by analyzing the specific manifestations of Big Government in defferent aspects and the inevitable factors that cause its return in this period.In the thesis, the author firstly gives an introduction to the theoretical backgrounds of two government management patterns. Then the author sorts through the development procedure of Small Government pattern and Big Government pattern in the United States, and illustrates the characteristics and connotations of both two patterns in American thoughts. Thirdly, the author focuses on the period of time in the first decade of 21st century. By analyzing the expansion of American government size and government role in the 2000s, the author presents the specific manifestations of Big Government and proves the resurgence trend of it in the new era. Finally, this thesis illustrates some important factors that caused the Big Government's return in the present time, and makes a prediction about its development in the future.In this paper, the author wants to express her disagreement on the present controversy on whether Small Government pattern is good or Big Government is good for America. Via the illustration in this paper, the author wishes to make clear that the choice of government pattern is not a simply whether-or question. Viewing the present situation objectively, people should understand clearly the fact that regardless of whether they admit or not,"Big Government"has already returned to the American political area and has played an important role in dealing with the current problems in the United States. Government should advance with the times, and make some appropriate change and adjustment in the specific conditions so as to satisfy the requirements in the new era.
