Sichuan International Studies University Pos Labeling For Words Ended With "化" In Modern Chinese

Parts of speech or word class is the corner stone of grammar studies, and it is also one of the important elements in the compilation of Chinese dictionaries. The research on word classes has a long history of over two thousand years, but there are still arguments on the essence of POS and the criterion of POS classification etc. As to the compilation of Chinese dictionaries, POS labeling is a difficult problem, and it becomes Achilles's heel in Chinese lexicography. Words ended with"化"are widely used in our daily lives in recent years, mainly because these words are of high productivity. What's more, words ended with"化"attract the attention of a large number of scholars most of whom study those words from the perspective of word form, and some study the grammatical function of words ended with"化". However, those studies on POS of words ended with"化"are weak-based, methodologically outdated, they lack deep investigation of words ended with"化"based on the large corpus. This Thesis is intended to carry out a deep and systematic investigation on all words ended with"化"in Chinese Contemporary Dictionary (5th edition) (CCD5 for short) and Modern Chinese Standard Dictionary (2004) (MCSD for short) through empirical studies guided by the usage-based theory.After having a brief review on the present studies in Chinese word class, POS labeling in Chinese dictionaries and on words ended with"化", this thesis, based on DIY database of POS recognition of words ended with"化"in CCD5 and MCSD and modern Chinese corpus of Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU (CCL for short), attempts to make an empirical study of POS labeling of words ended with"化"in CCD5 and MCSD under the theoretical guidance of the usage-based theory. It has been found that there are some problems in POS labeling of words ended with"化"in CCD5 and MCSD, the grammatical function of words ended with"化"is in dynamic change, they have been extended to noun, adjective from the primary usage of verb. The criterion for determining POS of words ended with"化"by the suffix"化"is not scientific and reasonable. Modern Chinese dictionaries should consider the change of grammatical function of words ended with"化"in practical usages with the help of large corpora, and it is irrational to label all words ended with"化"as verb by the means of the suffix"化".This study is not only significant for studies of the POS labeling in Modern Chinese lexicography, but also has theoretical implications for Modern Chinese grammar studies.
