At present, most scholars make comparative analysis of English news reports between China and western countries from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. There are not so many of them who apply stylistic theory to such analysis. And what's more, a few scholars who do employ this theory to do research often fail to reveal the underlying reasons hidden behind the differences---cultural factors. Hence in this thesis, with the assistance of corpus software, the author makes comparisons on the stylistic differences between Chinese and American news discourse on the same event"chile earthquake". By doing so, the author finds that even on the same event, differences exist between Chinese and American English newspapers. The main reason is that each nation respectively has unique thinking patterns, values, and so forth. In a nutshell, culture differences lead to stylistic differences. This thesis, on the one hand attempts to extends the study of stylistics through comparative analysis of news reporting and on the other hand to improve the English learners and the English journalists'understanding of another culture.
