The textbook plays an important role in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, because it is closely related to teachers and learners, and it serves as a source and a tool of teaching and learning. Besides, the textbook itself is a fundamental part in the teaching process. The quality of the textbook and its applicability have great influence on both teaching and learning. Hence, it is of great importance to choose an appropriate and practical textbook.The present study focuses on Road to success and Chinese Courses, the two comprehensive textbooks on elementary Chinese. It is based on the present textbook assessment theories, and on the surveys among the users of these two textbooks. With interviews with students and teachers who have used the two textbooks, the present thesis digs out the needs of learners and their evaluation of the textbooks. This thesis aims to find out compiling principles and methods of comprehensive textbooks on elementary Chinese, which can stir up students'learning motivation and improve learning efficiency and teaching quality, hence benefiting both teachers and students.
