After reaching the intermediate and advanced level of Chinese learning, overseas students start to focus on the usage of cohesion. As a result of it, a large amount of compound sentences are expressed in a non-smooth way without any syntactic mistakes. Some of them are caused by the inappropriateness of subject existence and non-existence.Considering the current situation we're confronting, the author chooses overseas students' subject existence and non-existence as the object of this study. Massive interlanguage materials, as well as Chinese language materials, are utilized as research samples. On the basis of above, the object has been deeply investigated according to the classification of Chinese compound sentences. When it comes to the research method, contrastive analysis, data statistics and case study are all well utilized to describe students' usage of subject existence and non-existence in detail, no matter it's appropriate or not. At the end of the study, an overall conclusion will be made in three aspects as followed:On the orientation of the subject existence and non-existence, students keep the consistency with native speakers in most aspects. However, some demerits still remain and a deeper understanding of concerned principles and rules is highly required. On the usage of fundamental principles, overseas students possess seven basic types of errors which differ in the sentences' classifications and the areas where the students come from.On the usage of detailed rules, students' main problem appears to be the lack of appropriate command of some particular associate words which play a dual role during the organization of the sentences.
