Many literary and artistic works that take Qi as its subject-matter have appeared in contemporary Chinese literature. The author of the thesis chooses several of the contemporary novels and video works for an intensive study. The novels include King of Chess by Acheng, The Girl Who Played Go by Shan Sa, Black and White by Chu Fujin, and The Master of Go by Yasunari Kawabata. The movies include The Go Masters (yi pan mei you xia wan de qi), King of Chess (qi wang), and The Go Master (Wu Qingyuan). Through the intensive study of the above works, the thesis aims to analyze the narrative meaning of Qi in these works from three aspects:the shaping of characters in literary works, the construction of forms and meanings of literary works, and the cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of Qi.The thesis consists of four parts. First, the characteristics of Qi influence the shaping of characters in literary works. Qi is both competitive and dialogic. Based on these characteristics, the characters in literary works can be divided into two groups accordingly:the opposite characters and complementary characters. Besides, the female characters in literary works are special. Some of them still carry the traditional Chinese virtues while some of them are more of a modem sense.Second, the dialogic characteristic of Qi has influence on the selection of point of view in literary works. It also has influence on the narrative techniques of the text. Besides,'the symbols of Qi always carry historic and cultural meanings which contribute to the theme of the text.Third, from the interdisciplinary point of view, the ways of representing Qi are different in literary and video works since the two are naturally different. At the same time, from the cross-cultural point of view, the cultural meanings of Qi differ in different cultures. The last part is a conclusion which manifests the significance of the thesis. The thesis is expected to propose comparatively new point of view to the study of contemporary Chinese literature with its study on the narrative meaning of Qi in contemporary literary and artistic works. Furthermore, the thesis is also expected to promote the study of Chinese Qi Culture in certain extent.
