A Study On The Later Movies Of Xu Anhua

With her unique characteristics, Xu Anhua, stands out of the male-director-dominated arena of Chinese movies. For all the peculiar and strenuous requirements for this profession, she has never lost her interest in or compromised her pursuit for it since her childhood. Rather, she has persevered and ridden all the tides, and prevailed.This thesis focuses on Xu Anhua's later movies. Diachronically, we trace her development of direction in style, genre, and characterization. Synchronically, we compare her style with other eminent female directors in both Hong Kong and Taiwan. Based on the above studies, we can obtain a clear understanding of her techniques of direction such as women perspective, women consciousness, tragedy tone, and simple narration.This thesis focuses on Xu Anhua's later movies.
