With the deepening of the reform in the new curriculum and the further development of foreign language teaching in China, more and more English teaching materials for foreign language learners with all levels of language proficiency have come out on the market. Teachers and students are faced with more options. In this situation, how to evaluate teaching materials objectively and choose more suitable materials for a particular group of students has become a big concern for the teachers.Through specific ways and means, domestic and foreign researchers in material evaluation have made a lot of attempts to evaluate and analyze the effectiveness, reliability and feasibility of teaching materials, and summarize the results of the analysis so that an overall understanding of the value of materials has been obtained, which provides the criteria for teachers and experts to evaluate the teaching materials and select materials for learners. Meanwhile, material evaluation criteria provide writers with some guidelines for the writing and improvement of teaching materials. Therefore, the significance of material evaluation can not be ignored. Scientific and systematic analysis and evaluation of materials will provide valuable reference for the compilation, election and use of teaching materials. Thus, teaching materials will be able to play a more effective role in teaching.To accommodate regional social development and meet the actual needs of nationality education, training an adequate number of high-quality Mongolian talents with a solid knowledge of English language and the ability to use English, Chinese and Mongolian in communication has become one of the important tasks for nationality foreign language education. Mongolian English majors in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have a greater uniqueness in English learning. Relevant studies about it are increasing. Given the important roles of teaching materials in English education and the difficulty in choosing appropriate teaching materials for Mongolian English majors, the writer chose the topic for research and undertook an investigation and evaluation of the two sets of intensive reading materials Essential College English Course and Contemporary College English being used by Mongolian English majors in Inner Mongolia Normal University. It is hoped that the research results will provide some reliable data and feedback for the proper use of the current English teaching materials for the Mongolian English majors of the university and for the selection of appropriate English teaching materials for other nationality higher institutions of the country, so as to promote English teaching reform in ethnic minority areas and further improve the English teaching system.This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, in which the background, purpose and significance of the investigation, and the research areas and methods are dealt with. The second chapter is an overview of the relevant researches on teaching materials. Some concepts related to the research are defined and the inquiry criteria of the thesis are also put forward, based on the researches on teaching material evaluation. The third chapter is an analysis of Essential College English Course and Contemporary College English, which concerns the structural system, the content characters and the guiding principles. The fourth chapter analyses the currently used two sets of intensive reading materials with the data collected from the students'questionnaires and the teachers'interviews. The last chapter is a conclusion of the research, in which the writer not only presents the conclusion of the research according to the analysis of Essential College English Course and Contemporary College English and the findings of the investigation but also puts forth some suggestions for the editors, teachers and students.
