Adaptation-Theoretical Approach To Real Estates Names Of Four Municipalities

With the development of commodity economy, residential buildings appear one after another incessantly, and the names of the residential buildings become a new phenomenon which many scholars are interested in. The names of real estates are not only a social and cultural phenomenon, but also a linguistic one. Many of the previous relevant researches are descriptive in that they just focus on the categorization and characteristics of real estates names, but do not touch upon the internal mechanisms underlying the use of real estates names. Although the names are diverse, they are regular on the back. The present study mainly compares the real estates names confined in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing which are four representative cities in China to find out the similarities of real estate denomination. So, based on Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, we aim to explain reasons for the similarities of real estate denomination and to explore the generative process of real estates names.This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One provides a general introduction to our research including the objects, the rationale and the objective of the present study, methodology and data collection, as well as layout of the thesis. Chapter Two discusses the previous researches and point out the demerits of them. Chapter Three introduces some basic concepts of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory and constructs a framework based on the data. Chapter Four compares the data in three linguistic levels to find out the similarities of denomination, and meanwhile discusses functions of real estates names by means of discussing the relationship of linguistic choice and strategic choice. Chapter Five investigates the factors which influence the tendency of denomination based on the Adaptation Theory to interpret the generative mechanism of real estates. Chapter Six is the concluding remarks.This thesis carries out a comparatively comprehensive study of real estate denomination. Theoretically, it aims to provide a framework of real estate denomination based on the Adaptation Theory, within which the generative process of real estates names can be interpreted. Practically, it is expected that this study can give developers in other cities some inspiration so as to realize the healthy and orderly development of real estate denomination.
