The modern China has undergone unprecedented turmoil and changes. At that time, the foreign culture, politics, utilitarian value and modern thoughts have been spreaded widely, which resulted in a strong shock to China. The Chinese people have made tremendous changes and development ideologically and conceptually. Due to the penetration of colonial economy, foreign culture and some other objective forces, modern Shanghai, the earliest mature city in modern history has come into being. It is the cultural context in which different cultures of China and foreign countries mingled and fused that helped Shanghai to boom its economy and special culture. Because of this, wider space for developing Chinese culture can be expected. Under this circumstance, Shanghai attracted many outstanding artists from different countries, after which The Shanghai Painting school formed finally. However, there is a close relation between the formation and development of The Shanghai Painting school and those artists who lived on the sea. Such as Zhao Zhiqian, Ren Bonian, San Wu Yifeng, Liu Haisu, and Xu Beihong, they absorbed the good aspects of Western culture and combined it with traditional Chinese painting effectively. With bold changes and innovation, they finally formed their own unique style. The input of foreign culture led to the appearance of new ideas and aesthetic sense and eventually made The Shanghai Painting school interpreted as an influential school in the history of modern Chinese painting. Through the study of the analysis of the input of foreign culture and the formation, development, achievements and impact of The Shanghai Painting school, this article will let us understand clearly the great achievements of modern Chinese national painting and the reason of the decline of national painting in the late period of Qing Dynasty until the Chung Hsing of Chinese painting. Finally, nurtured in the national painting and absorbed the foreign culture elements, the painters of The Shanghai Painting school completed the transformation of modern national painting.
