The Reproduction Of Aesthetics In Lin Yutang's English Translation Of Chinese Classic Essays In The Ming And Qing Dynasties

This thesis is a tentative exploration into an aesthetic approach to translation studies and into Lin Yutang's(林语堂)translation aesthetics and the aesthetic reproduction in his translation of essays in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Lin's translation aesthetics are of theoretical and practical values, both of which are of great significance in translation theory and practice in the process of classics translation.Translation aesthetics have been developing over the years in the translation studies and have been gaining ever-increasingly wide acceptance. As a theory with inter-disciplinary quality, translation aesthetics view the translation from the perspective of aesthetic and guide the practice with aesthetic thoughts.Lin Yutang is a representative who applied aesthetic thoughts to translation studies and practice. The thesis is intended to explore Lin Yutang's translation aesthetics, and the application of his "aesthetic "principle in translations of essays in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Based on Lin's On Translation, the thesis studies Lin's translation principles centered on " aesthetics ";it explores Lin's choice of texts, and the internal and external causes for him to choose the essays in the Ming and Qing Dynasties; it reveals the embodiment of Lin's aesthetic perspective in essay translation both on the theoretical level and on the practical one, in which style, artistic images, rhetorical devices, and etc are analyzed, from which the thesis displays how Lin reproduces the aesthetic beauty of the classic essays in the Ming and Qing Dynasties which bears various kinds of beauties, such as beauty in ancient color, beauty in elegant style, beauty in concise diction and beauty in image, which are not only the evidence of Lin's translation competence but also a great pleasure for the readers to trace Chinese's simple life and spiritual happiness free from worldly restrictions in all his translation works.By analyzing Lin's aesthetic disposition, this paper concludes that Lin's translation aesthetics are of theoretical and practical values of great significance in creating the aesthetic beauty in the process of translation.
