A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Study On Aesthetic Characteristics Of Inkstone Sculpture Art In The Ming And Qing Dynasties

This paper is a translation practice report which introduces the translation process of the academic paper Study on Aesthetic Characteristics of Inkstone Sculpture Art in the Ming and Qing Dynasties under the guidance of Warner Koller's translation equivalence theory.It focuses on the important and difficult points in the translation process to explore proper translation methods of literature on traditional inkstone sculpture art.As one of the Four Treasures of Chinese Study,inkstones are traditional Chinese handicrafts with both practical use and aesthetic value.The art of inkstone sculpture is an important part of traditional Chinese sculpture art.Therefore,the translation of literature on traditional inkstone sculpture art is valuable.In order to complete a high-quality translation,the author firstly learned about some relevant knowledge of inkstone sculpture and built a glossary with the help of various tools.The author also chose Warner Koller's translation equivalence theory to guide this translation practice.Subsequently,based on the analysis of the source text,the author used the computer-assisted translation software KTrans to translate it.In post-translation proofreading,the author used the quality control software Xbench to assist revising the translation.She also conducted self-revising and invited her supervisor to revise the translation.On the basis of the above proofreading,she modified and optimized the translation several times.Through this translation practice,the author finds that in the academic papers on inkstone sculpture art,there are many professional terms and culture-loaded words,complex sentences and strong textual logic.For different levels of words,sentences and texts,the author carries out different hierarchical rankings of the five equivalents proposed by Koller.For the translation of professional terms and cultured-loaded words,the author ranks connotation equivalence and denotative equivalence in the first place to provide guidance for the translation of external content of words and the choice of vocabulary;for the translation of complex sentences,text-normative equivalence and pragmatic equivalence respectively stipulate the normalization and readability of the translation;formal equivalence should be given priority in the logical and aesthetic reappearance of the source text,so as to provide direction and guidance for the overall style of the translation.
