The Return Of Traditional Vocal Music

Chinese traditional vocal music includes traditional vocal art forms and traditional vocal music theory. The author is concerned with people's understanding of ethnic singing performances of "1000 people of one voice". Taking the development of traditional vocal art as its starting point, the discussion details how modern vocal music is deeply rooted in Chinese traditional art forms, and therefore ethnic music performances must possess an ethnic style. Traditional ethnic singing along with traditional music theory, however, have been consistently ignored by many in the music industry. This treatise, in addition to discussion on vocal skills, also encompasses the aesthetic criteria in the art of singing, the relationship between sound and emotion, word-melody relationships and many other aspects. This paper analyses traditional vocal art and traditional vocal music theory, and raises the significance of the legacy of traditional vocal music and culture in music colleges and the development of traditional vocal music.
