As a superior status,China keeps a peaceful and friendly relationship with Japan throughout chiliads before the Meiji Restoration which strengthens the national power of Japan and leads Japan to an external expansion way. As a result, the balance of national power of both countries changes the Sino-Japanese relationship and the Chinese attitude towards Japanese which changes from disdain to respect or from friendly to hostile.Based on objective facts,PU PAO and other historical resources, the paper uses historical materialism of Marxism to analyse the change of Chinese attitudes towards Japanese during the period of ten years from the foundation of PU PAO to the year that Japan invadered the Ryukyu Islands(the seventies and eighties of the 19th century)in induction, deduction, dialectical and contrast ways. The paper consideres the ten years mentioned above as an important turning period of Chinese attitudes towards Japan. In the first few years of PU PAO,Chinese saw Japanese in the traditional disdainful and ignorant way, which was changed by the develop of Japan and its invading Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands later. Since then,Chinese abandoned the traditional thoughts and got down to dealing with the Sino-Japanese relationship. At first Chinese ignored the the Sino-Japanese relationship. Then they disdained Japan during the beginning period of Meiji. Later, they approved of some Japanese reforms while they doubted of Japanese order reform. After Taiwan event,Chinese condemned Japanese and began to take precautions against Japan. Finally, they considered Japan as enemy after Japan invadered the Ryukyu Islands. As the Chinese attitudes towards Japan changed so many times in such a short period, these ten years were considered as important turning period resulted in the advocacy of learning from Japan and anti-Japan psychology after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. It was also an important period that Chinese calmed down to analyse the national conditions of both countries and the Sino-Japanese relationship, which provided a better understanding of both countries. One main function of history is to offer advises for future development, for research on morden Chinese attitudes towards Japanese offers us a deep and clear understanding between China and Japan from which we can see a proper attitude towards foreign countries.
