With the development of tourism industry in China in recent years, an increasing number of overseas visitors are coming to China, therefore high quality C-E tourism translation texts are indispensable. In the past two decades, many scholars and researchers have devoted to the study on the strategies and disciplines of C-E tourism translation, and the study results have made great contributions to the promotion of the quality of C-E tourism translation. C-E tourism translation, as one of the effective means to exchange idea and culture between China and western countries, plays an important and active role in promoting mutual understanding between them.In the framework of Conversational Cooperative Principle, tourism translation is a special kind of inter-linguistic and cross-cultural communicative activity, and the whole communicative process consists of two indispensable processes, namely the communicative process between the writer of the source text and the translator, and the communicative process between the translator and the target readers, in which the translator plays a central role in connecting the writer of the source text and the target readers. In the procedure of translation, the translator should take the target readers'cognitive environment and receptivity into account, and then convey the writer's intentions to the target readers by offering adequate contextual information to them. Based on this, this thesis applies the Conversational Cooperative Principle proposed by Grice as its theoretical basis, and selects C-E tourism translation texts about"Ten Top Views of the West Lake"in the two books TALKS ABOUT WEST LAKE IN DETAIL and OPEN HANGZHOU as samples of analysis to tentatively discuss the C-E tourism translation. In the first half of this thesis, this author puts forward that Grice's Conversational Cooperative Principle and its four maxims should be applied to guide tourism translation, based on the situation of tourism translation and the translation of"Ten Top Views of the West Lake"at home and abroad. In the second half of this thesis, this author expatiates upon the application of the four maxims in Conversational Cooperative Principle to the translation of texts about"Ten Top Views of the West Lake", illustrating with more than 30 translation examples, and also revises these inappropriate translations and gives her suggested translations. This author finally proposes three important steps of tourism translation. First of all, the translator understands the essential information of the source text based on the Conversational Cooperative Principle. Then, the translator should appreciate the meaning between the lines, and at the same time explores the connotation of the source text. Finally, the translator should find the most appropriate way to convey the information of the source text to the target readers according to the convention and format of the target language based on the four maxims in the Conversational Cooperative Principle. The thesis provides a new angle of thinking for the tourism translation practice in Hangzhou, namely the untouched one of Cooperative Principle, compensating for the weaknesses of the relevant existing studies on the tourism translation in Hangzhou. The results of this thesis and the three steps of tourism translation proposed by this author can help to promote the quality of the current C-E tourism translation in Hangzhou.
