Farewell Poetry is one of the important themes of the ancient poetry in China. The difference between such poetry and others lies in its unique communicative function. Therefore, this paper takes farewell poetry as the subject of study and starts from its creating occasions to discuss its communicative function and the impacts on farewell poetry. We could see the point, after analyzing the producing occasion, producing function and the creation of farewell poetry, that compared with the personal farewell poems, the ones created in the collective occasions, banquets farewell and written immediately have obvious aspect of social engagement. The creations of taking farewell with friends for border expeditions and duties mainly express encouragement and wishes to friends; the creations of comforting friends after failing in examinations and losing jobs mainly express the sympathy and comfort; the creations of sending friends for hermitship express the tired mood for officialdom and the desire for hermitship.
