In ancient China, astronomy had a unique status, not only as a natural science but also in relation to people’s production technology.More importantly, astronomy was intertwined with political, military, religious and philosophical ideas, and many sages traced the origins of human civilisation and explored the relationship between heaven and earth and man,all reflecting the close connection between astronomy and humanities. The development of astronomy has also had a significant impact on literary creation.A review of pre-Tang astronomical poetry indicates that, from the Book of Songs and Songs of Chu to the Nineteen Old Poems to the poetry of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, there were numerous writings on astronomy and astrology throughout the ages, proving that the incorporation of astronomy into poetry was a tradition with a long history.During the Tang Dynasty, poetry reached a new peak, and the rich astronomical elements in poetry provided a unique perspective and valuable first-hand information for the study of ancient Chinese astronomy.A statistical analysis of the 238 astronomical poems collected shows that,in terms of content, the poems include such astronomical references as ’Northern Dipper’,’the handle of the Dipper’,’Antares’,’Purple Forbidden Enclosure’ and ’Dipper Mansion’,"In terms of the number of poems, there are more astronomical poems written by poets such as Du Fu,Li Bai,Song Zhiwen and Li Zhi.During the early Tang period, the creation of suburban temple music, court poetry and farewell poetry became important forms of poetry for communicating and conveying emotions between heaven and man, emperor and subject, and friend and friend. The political element and purpose of these three types of poetry is more pronounced, for example, when a poem is composed around a court event,or when a friend is sent off to a distant location to serve as an official. The contexts, personalities and ideological directions of these poems have become an important basis for later scholars to study the activities of the court and the thinking of the literati in the early Tang dynasty. It is important to categorise the poems related to astronomy in the early Tang dynasty in order to focus on the role played by astronomical elements in each of the different poetic genres. In conclusion, the poetry of the early Sheng Tang dynasty was characterised by astronomical and astronomical theories, and the inclusion of astronomy in poetry demonstrates the inclusiveness and originality of the poetic inheritance and innovation of the Tang generation. |
