The Translator's Subjectivity And Its Presentation In Translating Process

The translator is the most dynamic factor in translation. The study of translator'ssubjectivity has been flourishing for the past few years. However, some problems stillremain. Firstly, the study of subjectivity is usually connected with a certain translationcritique, but the subjectivity the translator performs in the specific translation processis neglected. Secondly, the motivations behind the translator's subjectivity have rarelybeen explained. Finally, the dialectical idea of subjectivity and the limited freedom oftranslator have not been mentioned enough.This dissertation tries to explore how the translator involves her/himself in thetranslation process. In Chapter 1, the translator's position in China and in the Westwill be reviewed respectively. Then the gradual elevation of the translator's positionand the studyof it in the contemporarytime will be discussed.Chapter 2 deals with the translator's subjectivity. Some typical definitions ofsubjectivitywill be discussed. Later, reasons for the neglect of translator's subjectivitywill be analyzed. At last, some modern translation schools'insightful ideas abouttranslator's subjectivity will be discussed.In Chapter 3, the presentation of translator's subjectivity in translating processwill be explored. Firstly, Douglas Robinson's somatic view on translator's subjectivitywill be introduced. Later, a new model will be proposed to illustrate how the translatorperforms in the translation process by applying the somatic view on the translator'ssubjectivity and Ezra Pound's translation of Chinese poetry will be taken as anexample.Finally, in Chapter 4, a dialectical point of view will be proposed, that is, thetranslator's subjectivity has its own limitation and constraints. As one typicalidiosomatic constraint, professional ethics and competence will be analyzed. Besides,as one typical ideosomatic constraint, the interrelationship between the translator andthe patron, author, and the reader will be taken into consideration.
