In terms of semantic and communicative translation theory developed by Peter Newmark, this article presents reflections on the translation of Joyce Carol Oates's short story"In the Region of Ice", which is done by the author of the article. Through the translation the author came to realize the the cultural differences in five areas manifest in the source text: religion, language, environment, physical and social. The author also discusses the possibility of eliminating these cultural differences by using semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory.
