Though methods of on-the-spot investigation, questionnaire survey, interview and comparison research, this essay has conducted a quite comprehensive research on the Chinese teaching in middle schools of New Zealand. The contents of this essay are literature research, Chinese teaching mode in NZ, teachers and teaching material of Chinese, Chinese learning motivation in middle schools, and so on. Firstly, this essay quoted two Chinese teaching samples to describe the main teaching modes in NZ's middle school which are"students–centered"and"topic-based".Then , through a questionnaire, the author collected and researched information about teachers of Chinese in NZ , as well as their view of and attitude towards some major problems such as"attitudes towards China's measures to promote Chinese teaching and learning","will Chinese become the second foreign language in NZ in 20 years", and so on. And also, with the same questionnaire, the author investigated what Chinese teaching materials are used in class and what the teachers'appraisal of teaching materials created in China are. A comparison of two textbooks——one from Australia and the other from China, is presented in this chapter as well. The last part of the essay deals with Chinese learning motivation. The author has designed and conducted a questionnaire with 96 answers to research on the Chinese learning motivation of middle school students. A number of findings can be expected in this chapter, including stronger integrative motive than instrumental motive, very low exam and certificate motive.
