On Subtitles Translation Of Cultural Images-a Case Study Of Gossip Girl

With the arrival of the information age,film and television industry has development with an unprecedented rapid speed. In this context, an immense number of the latest films reached the audience through the subtitles translation which breaks the language barriers to tell stories and present cultural connotations around the world. Furthermore, films with subtitles not only enable the audience to enjoy the latest movies in a short period of time, but also to appreciate the"original"works of film and television. Therefore, it has been highly esteemed that it has achieve a cross-cultural communication. Subtitle translation is a new area for research in the translation field in China. The cultural image in film subtitles translation has been attracted more and more people's attention. A correct explanation of cultural image can convey the message to the audience accurately. The famous translator Nida points out:"Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. The meaning of texts reflects the corresponding culture directly and indirectly. The meaning of words can finally find a place in corresponding culture."The words"image"comes from the modern literature criticism, it is a common terms in the contemporary literary criticism. It refers to all kinds of expression effected by the literary language. So any impressive language, appropriate metaphor and different sorts of symbolism can be called the image. Cultural image is a kind of cultural symbol which has a fixed special cultural meanings. Some of them contain rich and profound association. When people use them, the message will be conveyed from each other immediately. Therefore, it can be easily communicated. Cultural image consist of specific physical image (abstract) and the connotation (subjective). The characteristic of cultural image uses the virtual image instead of reality one. The function of it is uses the specific image to impress the abstract one in different contexts. Film translation is the process of converting two languages, and it is also the collision, blending and communication of two cultures. This thesis takes the American Drama Gossip Girl part two as an example for study and forty-seven caption dialogues with cultural image are collected. The paper attempts to analyze the cultural image in subtitles translation. The aim is to study the translation of the cultural image so as to bring a better understanding of the audience about the content and meaning as presentment by the films.
