Organic residue analysis is an important research in archaeology. There have beensome related independent studies about archaeological residues, such as plant andanimal remains, plant microfossil (starch grains and phytoliths etc.), furthermore, inwhich a wide range of studies of some pigment and adhesives is contained. However,a complete system of organic residue analysis of archaeological materials has notbeen established. The definition and categories of the archaeological organic residue, the principle of organic residue analysis are summarized on the basis of literaturereview. This analysis of organic residue from the painted ceramics aimed to knowwhether its uses is related with medicine.Based on headspace GC/MS and GC/MS analysis of several potsherds from TombShuangdun-1 in Bengbu, the comparison between modern Chinese herbal medicinesand pottery samples is made. Although this experiment haven't shown a satisfactoryresult, it is a useful test. Despite not showing its origins, this analysis suggests theorganic residue comes from plants.
