| This thesis is a systematic study of the translator's subjectivity in C-E translation of TV news. The traditional translation theories focus on the author and the source text, and oppose translator's modification of the original text. Since the"culture turn"in translation studies began in the 1970s, scholars have become more aware of the translator's subjectivity. The translator is not just a mediator between the author and the reader, but a dominator in the translating process. The task of the translator is not to decode and encode the language, but to introduce one culture into another culture, and promote the cross-cultural communication.TV news translation is different from other types of translation because it has its own unique characteristics. TV news translation is a process of re-expressing and re-creation. During this process, the translator makes the best of his/her subjectivity. Most English TV news is translated from Chinese news due to a lack of qualified English news writers and sufficient financial support. When translating the news, the translator is not rendering the news word by word. He/she edits the source text before translation, and adopts all kinds of variation techniques in and after translation, in the hope of making it more acceptable. The translation variation theory has a strong explanatory power to the translator's subjectivity in C-E TV news translation. The theory views translation as a process of deriving the essence of the original text by adopting appropriate variation techniques, such as adding, deleting, editing, paraphrasing, condensing, combining and rewriting, in order to meet the special needs of the readers. This thesis aims to initiate a theoretical model for TV news translation based on the translation variation theory, and reveal the manifestation and constraints of translator's subjectivity by qualitative and quantitative analysis of the self-produced corpus.Through the verification of the translated news material, this thesis intends to justify the translator's subjectivity. Hopefully, this thesis will be of some guiding significance in practice, and the model will help to improve the quality of translation and the efficiency of TV communication. |
