With the development of times, Chinese culture and arts are showing some pattern and trend of multiple development. New appreciation of the beauty is coming continuously, as with the diversification of the art forms related to them. The number of creators of traditional Chinese brush painting is very large and it plays the overwhelmed role in the Chinese art consumer market, but it is difficult to enter the modern art situation to some extent.The same as the modern painting, Chinese brush painting can totally express the living state and art experience of modern Chinese. Facing with the important questions of how to involve in modern Chinese culture and lives, embody the contemporary Chinese brush painting and its national spirit, some artists from northwestern area followed the base of Chinese art common principle and develop its local characters. Although lied in the border, still fell behind in politics, economy, culture, they hold the premise of contemporary people's living condition as well as the various problems facing the deep humanity concern. Although plays a pathfinder role, we can still see and hear the footprint and voice left in their journey.This thesis includes four parts. Centering on the explanation of concepts and nature character, the first part tries to define some key concepts such as modernism and brush paintings of northwestern area in this paper. The second part analyzes the temporal spirit of ink painting from northwest area and every stage has different performance characteristics. Though the analysis of Chang'an painting school and northwest painting school, we can see its advantage and disadvantage. Everything follows the general law of development of things. As the times development, the old things will be replaced by the new things, but we cannot ignore the inner meaning. The third part is the key part which concern about the appearance of brush painting from northwestern area. Based on concrete and in-depth analysis of the aesthetic concept, spirit connotation and art language construction of present northwest area representative artists works, this paper explores the development of brush painting from northwest area. Finally the thesis deepen the main theme, although the creation of modern brush painting from northwestern area is still in the process of exploring, we should not ignore the temporal spirit, humanistic solicitude and subjectivity feedback from its works. It followed the development principle of general arts.
